Ovulation is the name of the process that usually occurs once during each menstrual cycle, when hormonal changes cause the ovaries to release an egg. You can only get pregnant if a sperm fertilizes an egg. Ovulation usually occurs 12 to 16 days before the start of your next menstruation. Eggs are found in your ovaries. During the first part of each menstrual cycle, one of the eggs grows and matures.
